How to Find the Perfect Plus Size Wedding Dress

Aug 16, 2013

Finding the perfect wedding dress is difficult for any bride to be, but when most bridal boutiques only have dress samples in sizes 8, 10 or 12, it can be an absolute headache for a plus sized bride. That’s why we’ve put together some tips on what to look for in a plus size wedding dress. This guide should help you make a more informed decision, and hopefully help you find a wedding dress faster.

Consider your body shape

The first step toward choosing the right plus sized wedding dress is knowing your body shape. The ideal dress varies depending on our body shape. An hourglass or pear shaped bride should lean toward A-line dresses while apple or square shaped brides should consider something with an empire waist.

Consider the material

Heavy fabrics can have the tendency of making people look heavier. Gowns made from lighter fabrics like silk taffeta or organza give the opposite appearance. Light overlays of lace can enhance the airy look of a dress and help conceal imperfections.

Consider any adornments

Adornments like beads or crystals add visual weight to a dress. The placement of adornments near the bust or waistline can draw the eye to areas you may not want to accentuate. Use your discretion when trying on a dress with intricate bead work to be sure the design flatters your figure.

Know Your Numbers

Wedding dresses are not sized like regular clothing. It’s not uncommon for a wedding dress to be sized 2 sizes larger than a regular dress.  If you typically wear a size 16, you would wear a size 18 in a bridal dress. If you’re tall or petite it’s important to find a dress that accommodates you.
