Pretty Pageant Polish Picks: Part Two!

Jun 26, 2014

In our last blog post I shared an experience I had recently while shopping at a drugstore. Browsing the bounty of nail polish before me, all I could think about was which of our pageant dresses each would look best with! So I shared two of my favorite pageant dress/nail polish combos, and promised we’d be back with more. Well, today is that day! If you’ve had your eye on one of these pageant dresses and weren’t sure what to wear on your nails, consider my top picks from OPI alongside each!

Pretty Pageant Polish Picks: Part One!

Jun 20, 2014

We don’t have to tell you how much work goes into looking your prettiest for pageant. All that prepping and behind-the-scenes action would leave heads spinning if people only knew! You have to look your best from head to toe, exhibit poise, skill and confidence, and convey your passion for pageantry in every step and smile. And as we all know too well, some parts of getting ready are more fun than others! Here we’ll be focusing on one of those lighter, less serious, and more fun steps along the way to getting your look in order. Today we’re preaching the power of nail polish!

As I was recently browsing the nail polish options at a local drugstore I couldn’t help but think about which of the pageant dresses we offer each would look best with. When you spend as much time as we do ordering, fitting, and being surrounded by pageant gowns, it’s kind of hard to get them out of your mind when you leave at the end of the day! So I thought it would be fun to showcase some of my personal favorite pageant gowns and the nail polishes I think would complement them perfectly. And here are the first two, with more to come!

Shake Up Your Summer Skincare Routine: Shine for the Right Reasons Every Day and at Pageant!

Jun 18, 2014

Jovani 171835 Ball GownAs the weather outside continues its climb heading into summer, most of us are switching up our skincare routine and makeup. Those heavy creams that kept dry skin at bay in the winter would be more inclined to melt on a hot, sunny day, but it is just as important to care for your skin in the summer!

You want to look and feel your best every day, and while you’ll still be wearing more makeup at pageants than you do in your daily life, taking care of your skin can make it a bit more bearable to do so, even on the hottest days. I have put together a list of some of my personal favorite summer skincare and makeup products, some of which can be used every day and for pageant. This post isn’t endorsed by these companies in any way – I just wanted to share what works for me in hopes it might interest you!

Step 1: Cleanser
While I occasionally need something a bit richer during especially cold and windy months, the facial wash I use the majority of the year is Bliss Fabulous Foaming Face Wash. My skin leans more toward the dry side and is slightly sensitive, and I’ve never had an issue using this cleanser. A little goes a long way, and my face feels fresh and clean, but never tight or dry. This is a must-have that I never run out of and have been using for many years!

Step 2: BB Cream
While something more heavy than BB cream will be in order for most pageants, for everyday wear I like to keep my face makeup on the lighter side. As I mentioned above, my skin is on the drier side, so my favorite BB cream might not work for you if your skin tends toward oily. I have tried countless tinted moisturizers and BB creams at prices small and large, and my absolute favorite is L’Oreal Youth Code. It makes my skin feel well-moisturized and soft, the color blends nicely, the scent fades quickly, and while my skin does look fresher, it doesn’t look like I’m wearing a ton of makeup. It also offers SPF 15 protection, which means I don’t need a separate sunscreen most days. (I will use a separate sunscreen if I’ll be getting a lot of sun!)

Step 3: Mascara and Lip Gloss
While the cooler months may see me breaking out the eye shadow, highlighter, blush, eye liner, lipstick, and more, for the summer I am a mascara and lip gloss girl! When that temperature is creeping into the 90s and higher, I do not want to fuss with more than a couple products. For mascara, I keep coming back to Cover Girl Lash Blast Fusion. I will give other mascaras a try, when they’re included as a bonus gift for example, but when the time comes to buy one, it’s Fusion every time. As for lip gloss, I have quite an arsenal! But forced to choose my top 3, I would have to go with: Clinique Chubby Stick in Voluptuous Violet (goes on very light, but there’s still some color!); Smashbox Reflection High Shine in Candy (I really can’t get over how wonderful this gloss is – sparkly, truly moisturizing, and not sticky!); and, for days I really want unstoppable shine, MAC Dazzleglass in an array of amazing colors.

These are some of my favorite skincare and makeup products, and I hope you’ll share yours and why you love them in the comments! We’d also love to hear about how your everyday makeup differs from your pageant makeup. Do you take pageants as an opportunity to embrace a different side of yourself, or is it similar to your everyday look, but kicked up a notch?

  • 2 Tablespoons of sea salt

Find out what our favorite green dresses of 2014 were!

If there was one color that flew off our racks this season, it was all green! But don’t get too envious just yet – we’ve highlighted some of your most sought after, bought, and favorite green dresses of 2014!

Flirt P2831 – This gorgeous green chiffon floor-length prom dress with a high slit is one of our favorites from 2014. With the beautiful cut out center and jeweled embellishments, we just couldn’t keep this emerald beauty from Flirt by Maggie Sottero to ourselves this season!

Jasz Couture 5004 – When it comes to the pinnacle of sophistication, this show-stopping, green dress from Jasz Couture takes the cake. Strapless, beaded, and asymmetrical, this gorgeous gown’s elegance is something that many of our customers couldn’t get enough of this season!

Panoply 14647 – Mint was one of our biggest requests for colors this season, and this dress embodied that color so elegantly. This mermaid gown gives off a retro, vintage vibe while still using the season’s hottest color in a way that accentuates all this dress has to offer.

Sherri Hill 3907 – Sherri Hill knocked it out of the park with this green and glittering gown! With a stunning empire waist that highlighted the detail in the bodice, this gown not only was a best seller but one that we loved as well.

Prom Beauty 101: Applying your makeup the right way

Jun 5, 2014

Find out if you’re applying your makeup correctly with 10 simple steps!

Find out if you’re applying your makeup correctly with 10 simple steps!

When you’re applying your makeup before prom or any big event, you’re going to want it to last the whole night, right? When you’re dancing the night away in your gorgeous Alyce Designs gown, the last thing you want to be worrying about is if your eyeliner isn’t running down your cheeks. We have the right way to apply your makeup so it will stay for longer and look fabulous no matter what event you’re headed to!

  1. Wash your face with a cleansing facial wash, depending on your skin type. Pat your face dry with a clean towel.
  2. Next, use a toner if you have especially dry skin. This helps to get rid of any clogged pores, extra oil and dirt, and keep your skin looking fresh.
  3. Apply your moisturizer with SPF already in it. This will help keep your skin safe from the sun’s harmful rays and keep it supple.
  4. Next, you’ll apply your makeup primer.
  5. After your primer sets into your skin, dot your concealer on to your blemishes and/or dark circles. You’re going to want to blend this in as best as you can with a foam blender pad or a flat-tipped brush.
  6. Next comes your foundation. Make sure you’re applying a foundation that can be layered and not look too thick. You’ll want to apply this to your face and neck.
  7. After you’ve blended your foundation, apply your bronzer/highlighter. Apply these to your cheek bones, bridge of your nose, and point of your chin. Blend with a foam blender pad.
  8. Once your bronzer is blended, add your blush to the apples of your cheeks.
  9. Next, add your eye makeup. This includes your eyeliner, eye shadow, and mascara. Usually starting with the liner and working your way to the mascara is the best sequence, but your eye makeup should always be applied close to the end of your makeup application.
  10. Lastly, you’re going to want to apply the lipstick or lip gloss portion of your makeup routine. Make sure your lips are clean and exfoliated before you apply, and you’ll have long-lasting lips for the whole night.

What to do with those old prom dresses

Jun 5, 2014

Find some fun and creative ways to reuse your prom 2014 gown!

Find some fun and creative ways to reuse your prom 2014 gown!

Are you looking for new, fun, and creative ways to re-use or recycle old prom dresses? Luckily – we not only have a special interest in offering the best selection of prom dresses, but we also have a bunch of different ways you can get more than one use out of your prom 2014 gown! Here are some interesting ways you can dust off that magic dress and get it glammed up for a second round!

Throw a retro themed party – Maybe your dress isn’t considered retro just yet, but you still want to throw a fun, vintage themed prom party. You can literally use any one of your old prom dresses, throw on some converse, and crimp your hair to go with an 80’s themed prom party. Even if you do have a vintage dress – it doesn’t matter what era you go with, just get creative and invite all your friends!

Save it for Halloween – Why not be a Zombie Prom Queen when you head out for Halloween that year? Halloween is one of the best holidays to dig out the stuff you don’t wear on a regular basis and turn them into an unforgettable costume. Some of our favorite costume ideas to use your old prom gown for are Retro Prom Queen, Old Hollywood Starlet, or your favorite Childhood Princess are just a few.

Create something from the fabric – This is something for those who are a little more daring and crafty with a sewing machine, but creating memory quilt from the fabric can be a great way to reuse your old prom gown. If you’re not looking to cut it up completely, getting it framed and mounted into a shadow box can be a fun way to remember your gown too.
