No Stallion? Put On That Prom Dress And Go Stag!

Apr 25, 2011

prom dress

Years ago, when dinosaurs walked the earth and I was attending homecoming dance and prom events, tickets were sold in pairs of two, one set to a couple. Today, I look back and think about how impractical that was.

It’s the 21st century and gone are the days of waiting for the guy to ask you, and being broken-hearted and home alone if no one extended the invite.  That was the way it was, and everyone just went along with it, but no more!

Who says you need a date to go to the prom or to any formal gathering? Why should you miss the fun? Round up your girlfriends and plan a “stag” singles table! Prom should be a celebration, and no one ever said you need either a date, a boyfriend, or a man to have a great time, right?

There’s nothing wrong with going to the prom with a date, but if you don’t have one, and want to go, do it!  Be a strong and independent young woman, and don’t let outdated traditions stand in your way.

It’s all about looking, feeling and being your best, so shop for that special prom dress, find all of your perfect accessories, and knock ‘em dead!

Dressing a Tall Figure

Feb 24, 2011

Look great no matter what!

Look great no matter what!

Prom season is on its way, and it’s time to start thinking about dates and prom dresses.  You have a little more control over your dress than you do over your date—so you should focus on what you can.  If you happen to be one of the taller ladies out there, you might wonder how to deal with a date that’s a little shorter than you.  Here at Dress Prom, we have prom gowns for girls of every shape and size.  If you’re a little taller, here are some tips to downplay your height.  (Your short date will thank you for it!)

  • Choose a prom dress with a long top portion.  This will help to visually shorten your legs.
  • If you’re going with a pattern, choose something that has a horizontal slant to it.  If you wear something more vertical, that will serve to elongate your figure.   You’re trying to look shorter, so horizontal is the way to go.
  • Try mixing light and dark shades.  The contrast will help to visually shorten your shape, as well.
  • It should go without saying, but consider wearing flat shoes instead of heels.  If you’re wearing a full ball gown, you can wear flat shoes and nobody will even notice!
  • Avoid a monochromatic prom look.
  • Pick prom dresses with large details.  They’ll make your body look smaller by contrast.

Do you have any other tips for dressing a taller figure?

Prom Night Lipstick Tricks

Nov 30, 2010

One of the most important aspects of your prom or semi-formal ensemble is your makeup.  When you’re getting ready for the big day, pay special attention to your lipstick.  Here at Dress Prom, we have a few tips and tricks to help you make the most of your lipstick on prom night.

Keep it fresh for the big dance

Keep it fresh for the big dance

  • Pick one feature and run with it.  If you choose to amp up the lipstick, then stick with that.  If you’ve got heavy lipstick and heavy eyeshadow you might end up looking a little overdone.
  • Lipstick will last longer if you fill in your lips with a lip liner first.  Try a nude or light-colored liner, and put your lipstick on top.  It’s also a good trick for applying lip gloss.  The liner actually gives the gloss something to stick to.  This is ideal for keeping your lipstick going all evening!
  • Did you know that you can prevent those ghastly lipstick lines on your drinking glass?  Just give your lips a little lick before you sip, and it shouldn’t rub off quite as much.
  • If your lipstick breaks off, it’s not the end of the world.  You can fix it!  Take the broken portion out of the tube and wave a lit match under the broken piece of lipstick.  When it’s melted a bit, you can put it back on the base.  Swivel it around a bit, and put it in the fridge.  Make sure you leave it uncovered.  Voila!  Good as new.  This can be a helpful trick in a pinch.

Homecoming Makeup Tips: DIY for Less

Oct 22, 2010

You can do your own makeup for the homecoming dance and still look fabulous.  Doing it yourself can also help you save a few dollars on the big evening.

  • If you don’t feel totally comfortable doing it yourself, see if you know any friends or relatives that have could do a polished makeup look for you.  You’d be surprised at what the people you know can do!
  • Practice ahead of time.  There are so many ways to do makeup, that you don’t want to save it until the last minute.  You’re probably aiming for a more dramatic look than you use on a regular day-to-day basis, so it’s important to do a makeup run through.
  • It’s good to find out in advance what your makeup will look like so that you’ll feel comfortable and beautiful on homecoming night.
  • You don’t have to spend a fortune to look fabulous.  But make sure you have some fun!  This is the time to try the things you’ve always wanted to try.  Experiment with fake lashes and bold, beautiful lips.
  • Remember, you’re going to take a lot of pictures to remember how great the night was.  Make sure you look as fabulous as you possibly can.
