You’re Not Too Young to Worry About Wrinkles

Aug 5, 2010

Dress Prom get wrinkles out of your dressDon’t worry… we’re not talking about your face!  We’re talking about your prom, homecoming, and pageant dresses.  You might find yourself in a position where you need to wear one of those dresses again, only to find that it’s all wrinkly.  If you have two proms to go to, and you wear the same dress— it might have gotten wrinkled when you packed it up for an after party.  Or perhaps your closet it just so full of pageant dresses that it’s impossible to keep them all neat and wrinkle-free.  So what do you do?  Don’t worry, Dress Prom has a few tips for getting those wrinkles out.

  • Hang the dress up on a plastic hanger and hook it onto something in the bathroom.  The towel bar, the shower curtain rod, the towel bar… whatever you’ve got.  Just make sure the dress isn’t touching the ground.
  • Start the shower up using hot water.  (Make sure the curtain is closed if you’ve decided to hang the dress on the shower rod!)  Shut the bathroom door and run the shower for about five minutes.  Let it get steamy.  (If it’s too steamy for you, just leave the room and wait the five minutes outside.)
  • Shut the shower off, and let the dress hang in the steam-filled room for about a half hour.  The steam should loosen the wrinkles in the dress.
  • Check the dress out.  If you think it’s necessary, repeat the process.

This won’t remove any really deep or set-in wrinkles, but it will certainly give new life to something that’s just a little bit crumpled!

Plus Size Pretty

Jun 10, 2010

plus size fashionEvery girl wants to look beautiful when she walks into that big party.  It doesn’t matter if you’re toothpick thin or fabulously curvy— you should be able to look as pretty as you want to.  The average woman’s dress size is a 14.  Seriously, Marilyn Monroe wore a size 14.  So why do most high-end fashion houses cater to that small percentage of women that are a size two?  Lucky for you, DressProm.net has a full line of plus size prom gowns to make you feel like a princess.

Don’t hide it!  Pride it!

You can’t camouflage your waistline by covering it with layers and layers of fabric.  It’s actually going to have the opposite effect you want.  Find a dress with a cinched in waist or belt.  It will actually help create curves and make you look fabulous.

Boastfully bust-full
Accentuate your bust line with a dress that has an empire waist.  It’ll actually serve double-duty.  Your waist will be defined (like we talked about before), and your “girls” will look tastefully accented.

It’s hip to be hip
If your hips are a problem area for you, then you need to pull the attention elsewhere.  Don’t wear something form fitting on that spot.  A-line dresses are the perfect style for hiding problem hips.

What’s the Dress Code for “Semi-Formal”?

May 14, 2010

We all know that your prom is a “formal” occasion.  Girls are supposed to wear gowns (or some other suitable fancy dress), and guys are supposed to wear tuxedos.  But what do you where to something that’s designated as “semi-formal”?

Many high schools have semi-formal dances in the beginning of the school year, so it’s not too early to start thinking about this now!

The basic rule of thumb is that semi-formal falls somewhere between “casual” and “formal.”  That means that guys can’t go in khaki pants and polo shirts, but they don’t have to wear tuxedos, either.  A suit with a nice button-down shirt is appropriate for something semi-formal.

But what about girls?

  • Fashions change, but some basic rules stay the same.  Generally, a semi-formal dress can range from a cocktail dress to something along the lines of a tea-length dress.  So you want the hemline somewhere between 1″ above the knee and 3″ above the ankle.
  • Any silky fabric is appropriate.  For something semi-formal, it might be a little overboard to wear something overly-poofy or princess-like.  (Save that for prom!)
  • There’s also some freedom as far as shoes are concerned.  Dress heels are appropriate, but you could also get away with something flat.  Just stay away from flip flops!

Recycle Your Old Prom Dress

May 10, 2010

These days, it seems like everyone is recycling everything.  Why should your prom dress be any different?  Don’t shove it in a box in the attic— go ahead and do something useful with it.

  1. One of the simplest ways to recycle your prom dress is to give it to someone you know that might need it.  Perhaps you have a sister or a cousin that can use it in a year or two.  With some crafty alterations, any dress can have some longevity.  (Think Pretty in Pink!)
  2. If you don’t personally know someone that might be able to use the dress, you can always donate it to a charity.  That always offers up a warm, fuzzy feeling.
  3. The easiest way to alter the dress for you is to just shorten the length.  You can turn a gown into a cute tea-length dress that you can wear out for a night on the town.  You’ll definitely be one of a kind!
  4. If you’re feeling especially crafty, you can try turning the dress into some other pieces of clothing.  For example, you can turn the top of the dress into a tank or tube-top.  All you have to do is cut the dress off at the waist and hem the bottom to clean up any rough edges.
  5. The same thing goes for the bottom of the dress.  There’s nothing saying you can’t turn it into a skirt.  If your dress was more of a gown, you can always hem the skirt up a little bit for a more casual look.
  6. If you don’t want to wear it anymore, you can make some decorative throw pillows from the skirt.  That’s one way you can relive your prom night every night!
  7. Waste not, want not:  Any leftover fabric you have from your prom dress craft projects can always be used as cute hair accessories.

So don’t throw that magical evening into the closet.  Do something with the dress that you (or some other lucky girl) can enjoy after your prom night.

Short Dresses are Making a Splash!

Mar 19, 2010

Prom season is already in full swing and that means that there are tons of girls out there looking to find the perfect gown – or not.

In 2009, print dresses and long, full ball gowns were all the rage. Now, hemlines are higher and girls are ready to dance the night away in flirty little styles that are purely playful and a whole lot of fun.

Shorter prom dresses are becoming a huge trend for this year’s prom, especially since many celebs have rocked the look on the red carpet at various award shows throughout the year. Short lengths that are strapless, playful, or are inspired by classic little black dresses are perfect for this year’s occasion.

Also, to be in line with some of the other hot trends look for short dresses the feature ruffles, sweetheart necklines, or a single sleeve. These special touches, coupled with the flirty cut of your short prom dress, will be a guarantee that heads will turn when you walk in on prom night.

As for hair and makeup? Go with a bold, matte red lip in a shade that flatters your skin tone with just a touch of blush and simple eyes. For hair, go with something bold if you’re feeling daring, like a playful pixie cut. Or, if you’d rather something more elegant, a sweeping updo is perfect.

Tips for Caring for Your Prom Dress

Jan 19, 2010

Want to make sure that you can reuse your prom dress or keep it looking perfect well after that special evening? Use these five tips for caring for your prom dress to keep your gown looking brand new for many proms to come:

  1. Follow the care instructions included with you dress. In most cases, they’ll be “Dry Clean Only” which means you should NEVER try to wash your dress yourself. Take your gown only to a professional to be cleaned.

  2. If you accidently get eye shadow, lipstick, or other makeup on your dress, dampen the stain with warm water and pretreat it by rubbing a little bit of liquid detergent. Rub the detergent directly into the stain until the outline is gone. Next, wash the spot in warm water and let dry. If you’re still stuck, take the dress to a dry cleaner. They may know the best way to get that stain out of your gown.

  3. Store your gown in a garment bag that accommodates the natural size and shape of the gown. Keep the garment bag zipped or sealed to prevent any wear on the dress.

  4. Have wrinkles on your gown? Have it professionally pressed or steamed to get it looking smooth again.

  5. Finally, when you bring your dress home, make sure that it has plenty of space to breathe. Don’t shove it in a closet or corner. Make sure that it isn’t touching any other clothing and is out in the open. After it’s worn, then store it properly using a garment bag.
