Pretty Pageant Polish Picks: Part Two!

Jun 26, 2014

In our last blog post I shared an experience I had recently while shopping at a drugstore. Browsing the bounty of nail polish before me, all I could think about was which of our pageant dresses each would look best with! So I shared two of my favorite pageant dress/nail polish combos, and promised we’d be back with more. Well, today is that day! If you’ve had your eye on one of these pageant dresses and weren’t sure what to wear on your nails, consider my top picks from OPI alongside each!

Pretty Pageant Polish Picks: Part One!

Jun 20, 2014

We don’t have to tell you how much work goes into looking your prettiest for pageant. All that prepping and behind-the-scenes action would leave heads spinning if people only knew! You have to look your best from head to toe, exhibit poise, skill and confidence, and convey your passion for pageantry in every step and smile. And as we all know too well, some parts of getting ready are more fun than others! Here we’ll be focusing on one of those lighter, less serious, and more fun steps along the way to getting your look in order. Today we’re preaching the power of nail polish!

As I was recently browsing the nail polish options at a local drugstore I couldn’t help but think about which of the pageant dresses we offer each would look best with. When you spend as much time as we do ordering, fitting, and being surrounded by pageant gowns, it’s kind of hard to get them out of your mind when you leave at the end of the day! So I thought it would be fun to showcase some of my personal favorite pageant gowns and the nail polishes I think would complement them perfectly. And here are the first two, with more to come!

Shake Up Your Summer Skincare Routine: Shine for the Right Reasons Every Day and at Pageant!

Jun 18, 2014

Jovani 171835 Ball GownAs the weather outside continues its climb heading into summer, most of us are switching up our skincare routine and makeup. Those heavy creams that kept dry skin at bay in the winter would be more inclined to melt on a hot, sunny day, but it is just as important to care for your skin in the summer!

You want to look and feel your best every day, and while you’ll still be wearing more makeup at pageants than you do in your daily life, taking care of your skin can make it a bit more bearable to do so, even on the hottest days. I have put together a list of some of my personal favorite summer skincare and makeup products, some of which can be used every day and for pageant. This post isn’t endorsed by these companies in any way – I just wanted to share what works for me in hopes it might interest you!

Step 1: Cleanser
While I occasionally need something a bit richer during especially cold and windy months, the facial wash I use the majority of the year is Bliss Fabulous Foaming Face Wash. My skin leans more toward the dry side and is slightly sensitive, and I’ve never had an issue using this cleanser. A little goes a long way, and my face feels fresh and clean, but never tight or dry. This is a must-have that I never run out of and have been using for many years!

Step 2: BB Cream
While something more heavy than BB cream will be in order for most pageants, for everyday wear I like to keep my face makeup on the lighter side. As I mentioned above, my skin is on the drier side, so my favorite BB cream might not work for you if your skin tends toward oily. I have tried countless tinted moisturizers and BB creams at prices small and large, and my absolute favorite is L’Oreal Youth Code. It makes my skin feel well-moisturized and soft, the color blends nicely, the scent fades quickly, and while my skin does look fresher, it doesn’t look like I’m wearing a ton of makeup. It also offers SPF 15 protection, which means I don’t need a separate sunscreen most days. (I will use a separate sunscreen if I’ll be getting a lot of sun!)

Step 3: Mascara and Lip Gloss
While the cooler months may see me breaking out the eye shadow, highlighter, blush, eye liner, lipstick, and more, for the summer I am a mascara and lip gloss girl! When that temperature is creeping into the 90s and higher, I do not want to fuss with more than a couple products. For mascara, I keep coming back to Cover Girl Lash Blast Fusion. I will give other mascaras a try, when they’re included as a bonus gift for example, but when the time comes to buy one, it’s Fusion every time. As for lip gloss, I have quite an arsenal! But forced to choose my top 3, I would have to go with: Clinique Chubby Stick in Voluptuous Violet (goes on very light, but there’s still some color!); Smashbox Reflection High Shine in Candy (I really can’t get over how wonderful this gloss is – sparkly, truly moisturizing, and not sticky!); and, for days I really want unstoppable shine, MAC Dazzleglass in an array of amazing colors.

These are some of my favorite skincare and makeup products, and I hope you’ll share yours and why you love them in the comments! We’d also love to hear about how your everyday makeup differs from your pageant makeup. Do you take pageants as an opportunity to embrace a different side of yourself, or is it similar to your everyday look, but kicked up a notch?

Don’t worry – there’s a good mix! Some were chosen for their lyrics in particular, and others because they just have a way of making us belt them out loud and maybe even jump around a little bit. Spring 2014 Makeup Trends Pageantified!

Mar 31, 2014

Some gals are obsessed with shoes, some with the latest in celebrity gossip. As for me, it’s all about makeup and purses! I mean, sure, there are other things I get pretty passionate about. Fancy dresses, for one, and I’ve been known to browse puppy pictures for hours on end. But when it comes to the big seasonal announcements, such as the best makeup trends for spring 2014, that’s when I just about lose my mind with excitement. Seriously, I can’t watch the videos, read the articles, or look at the pretty pictures fast enough!

Bright Orange LipstickI was recently flipping through some articles on what’s poised for greatness in the makeup world this spring, and started thinking about how those looks work for pageants. Let’s look at a few selections from Glamour Beauty’s The Best Makeup Trends From Spring 2014 Fashion Week and see how they stack up for the stage…

Trend: Soft Berry Lips – As we all know, words like ‘soft’, ‘subtle’, and ‘muted’ can translate to ‘washed out’ once the bright lights hit. However, if you’re going for a more natural look, or really want to play up your eyes, this trend could work. Is a bold lip a must? Ignore the call for softness, but sweeten up to the idea of a rich berry!

Trend: Bright Orange Lipstick – You know, I really wish this would work for me! I ADORE orange and often gravitate toward it when buying things for my home. Orange dishes, orange candles, orange throw pillows and more. But as a lighter skinned lady with pink undertones, orange is a tricky color to pull off when it comes to clothes and makeup. That said, for many who don’t share my coloring, orange is an absolute homerun. It’s fresh, youthful, unique and eye-catching, and if it works with your skin tone and hair color, please give it a try in pageant and beyond!

Trend: Glowing Skin – Yes, yes, and a little more yes. And then throw in another yes for good measure! I am just as drawn to the look of flawless matte skin in a magazine as the next girl is, but in real life it can look flat, dry and lifeless. Dewy, fresh, glowing skin, however? That just about always looks amazing, whether you’re headed to the office, a pageant, or just want to look fabulous while you read the Sunday paper. The bonus is that it feels better and often is better for your skin as well. Since you aren’t striving for a flat matte, you can feel free to work with a super skin-satisfying moisturizer as your base. This makes it easier to smile because your skin feels nourished, and because you’ve taken all the power away from powder!

Dry Skin for Homecoming – Be Gone! Banish it With Our Avocado Moisturizing Face Mask

Sep 26, 2013

Try out this awesome, moisturizing avocado mask before you go to homecoming 2013!

Try out this awesome, moisturizing avocado mask before you go to homecoming 2013!

With this time of the year comes something that all divas’ dread: dry skin. Whether it’s your nose or around your forehead, this seasonal annoyance can be prevented with two of your favorite household ingredients. Who knew that mixing an avocado and honey together could help you banish the dry skin so you can dance the night away during homecoming 2013 in pure confidence?

Avocado & Honey Moisturizing Face Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 Avocado, ripe, skinned, and mashed
  • ½ cup of Organic Honey

Directions:

Cut the avocado around the pit, twisting both sides in opposite directions until the sections separate from the pit. Scoop the pit out of the half with a spoon and throw away. Next, take each section of the avocado, cut into smaller, square sections. Then take your spoon, run it around the part where the skin meets the flesh of the vegetable and spoon into a bowl. Mash the avocado until it is a paste, and then mix in the half of cup of organic honey. Mix these two ingredients until smooth.

Next, you’ll apply this mixture to your whole face, or just the problem areas, for at least 15 minutes. Wait until the mask is dry, and then remove it with a damp washcloth. Make sure you’re doing all you can to prevent those dry spots so you can enjoy your homecoming 2013 free of worry!

Win Over the Judges with These DIY beauty Tips

Jun 21, 2013

Don't let the snag stop you and use these beauty fixes in your next pageant!

Don't let the snag stop you and use these beauty fixes in your next pageant!

Pageant girls know that when you’re in a pinch, time is everything. Even when it comes to your hair, makeup, and nails, a little slip up could cost you the whole pageant! Don’t worry though: DressProm.net has the best beauty tips so that your pageant dresses and personality will impress the judges, not your beauty faux pas!

  • Have a run in your stockings that’s starting somewhere that people can’t see, but you’re afraid it might get bigger? Grab some clear nail polish and paint the run. The clear nail polish keeps the run from growing until you remove your stockings!
  • If you bump your nails while they’re still wet with polish, lick the spot that smudged. Your saliva mixes with the polish and makes the snag smooth again.
  • Forgetting your eyelash curler is a drag. When you forget this magic tool, take a spoon and turn it bottom side out. Press the edge of the spoon against your eyelid gently, popping your eyelashes up and out. Apply the mascara while doing this with the spoon and your eyelashes will be just as curled as if they were with the actual tool.
  • If you’re hair is a bit shiny with grease before you head out on stage, don’t fret! Take a flat brush, spray some aerosol hairspray on the bristles, and brush on the greasy spot.  The aerosol hairspray works almost like a dry shampoo and dulls the oil in your hair.
  • Have a pimple the night before pageant day? Apply some white toothpaste or a tablet of aspirin, crushed with water to the spot. The toothpaste takes the red out of the pimple, while the aspirin paste reduces the puffiness.
  • Dark circles under your eyes from the night before the pageant? Highlighter will fix it! Take a foundation brush, apply directly over the dark circles, and blend in with your foundation. The light color and reflective properties of the highlighter deflects light from the dark circles, making them look healthy, well rested, and glowing!

Perfect Pageant Playlist: Sharing Your Talent

May 31, 2013

You can dance, act and sing. You’re a triple threat! But this pageant, you want to belt out your favorite tune for the talent portion. Golden vocal chords can only really be appreciated if they’re singing the right song. Like any talent competition, the winner not only had a great singing ability, but they chose the right song. Being able to pull off some of these songs will lock in the talent portion of the pageant.

  1. Mariah Carey – My All
  2. Kelly Clarkson – A Moment Like This
  3. Judy Garland – Somewhere Over the RainbowTalent-Pageant-Gown
  4. Celine Dion – My Heart Will Go On
  5. Whitney Houston – I Will Always Love You
  6. Aerosmith – I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing
  7. Diana Ross & Lionel Richie – Endless Love
  8. Tina Turner – What’s Love Got To Do With It
  9. K-Ci and JoJo – All My Life
  10. Paul McCartney – Maybe I’m Amazed
  11. Cyndi Lauper – Time After Time
  12. LeAnn Rimes – How Do I Live
  13. Colbie Caillet – I Do
  14. Carrie Underwood – I’ll Stand By You

Don’t forget about the classics either! A good performance of a show tune can take you a long way, too. Learning a song from Annie or Guys and Dolls might just be the right decision. So remember when you’re on stage in your beautiful pageant evening gown, keep your head up and sing the song that is right for you!
