Shake Up Your Summer Skincare Routine: Shine for the Right Reasons Every Day and at Pageant!

Jun 18, 2014

Jovani 171835 Ball GownAs the weather outside continues its climb heading into summer, most of us are switching up our skincare routine and makeup. Those heavy creams that kept dry skin at bay in the winter would be more inclined to melt on a hot, sunny day, but it is just as important to care for your skin in the summer!

You want to look and feel your best every day, and while you’ll still be wearing more makeup at pageants than you do in your daily life, taking care of your skin can make it a bit more bearable to do so, even on the hottest days. I have put together a list of some of my personal favorite summer skincare and makeup products, some of which can be used every day and for pageant. This post isn’t endorsed by these companies in any way – I just wanted to share what works for me in hopes it might interest you!

Step 1: Cleanser
While I occasionally need something a bit richer during especially cold and windy months, the facial wash I use the majority of the year is Bliss Fabulous Foaming Face Wash. My skin leans more toward the dry side and is slightly sensitive, and I’ve never had an issue using this cleanser. A little goes a long way, and my face feels fresh and clean, but never tight or dry. This is a must-have that I never run out of and have been using for many years!

Step 2: BB Cream
While something more heavy than BB cream will be in order for most pageants, for everyday wear I like to keep my face makeup on the lighter side. As I mentioned above, my skin is on the drier side, so my favorite BB cream might not work for you if your skin tends toward oily. I have tried countless tinted moisturizers and BB creams at prices small and large, and my absolute favorite is L’Oreal Youth Code. It makes my skin feel well-moisturized and soft, the color blends nicely, the scent fades quickly, and while my skin does look fresher, it doesn’t look like I’m wearing a ton of makeup. It also offers SPF 15 protection, which means I don’t need a separate sunscreen most days. (I will use a separate sunscreen if I’ll be getting a lot of sun!)

Step 3: Mascara and Lip Gloss
While the cooler months may see me breaking out the eye shadow, highlighter, blush, eye liner, lipstick, and more, for the summer I am a mascara and lip gloss girl! When that temperature is creeping into the 90s and higher, I do not want to fuss with more than a couple products. For mascara, I keep coming back to Cover Girl Lash Blast Fusion. I will give other mascaras a try, when they’re included as a bonus gift for example, but when the time comes to buy one, it’s Fusion every time. As for lip gloss, I have quite an arsenal! But forced to choose my top 3, I would have to go with: Clinique Chubby Stick in Voluptuous Violet (goes on very light, but there’s still some color!); Smashbox Reflection High Shine in Candy (I really can’t get over how wonderful this gloss is – sparkly, truly moisturizing, and not sticky!); and, for days I really want unstoppable shine, MAC Dazzleglass in an array of amazing colors.

These are some of my favorite skincare and makeup products, and I hope you’ll share yours and why you love them in the comments! We’d also love to hear about how your everyday makeup differs from your pageant makeup. Do you take pageants as an opportunity to embrace a different side of yourself, or is it similar to your everyday look, but kicked up a notch?

Make a Memorable First Impression at Pageant with These Opening Number Dresses!

May 23, 2014

Alyce 2277 Cocktail DressTerani P677 Pageant DressWhether you’re meeting your boyfriend’s parents, starting a new class, or going on a job interview, chances are good that you’re concerned with making a fabulous first impression. Because, let’s face it, we don’t always do just that! It seems so simple when it’s written down, but there are countless things in life that come into play when we least expect them, often resulting in us leaving a less-than-awesome first impression despite our preparation. While we can’t prepare for 100% of the things that can happen, we can prepare in some ways. And when it comes to choosing opening number pageant dresses, here are two important things to consider…

Express Yourself – Nope, we aren’t talking about the Madonna song – we’re talking about you! Finding a beautiful pageant dress isn’t tricky; there are countless captivating dresses to choose from. But what does take some work is finding one that not only catches your eye, but really speaks to who you are and your unique sense of style. You’ll always feel your best, look your best, and perform your best when you are in love with the dress you’re wearing. It takes more than a great gown to win the crown, of course, but it certainly doesn’t hurt!

Give Yourself Some Room to Move – Keep the opening number routine in mind when choosing your opening number pageant dress. You want to be sure your dress isn’t too tight or short for what you’ll be doing during opening number. Even if you won’t be dancing at all, practice your poses in your opening dress before hitting the stage. If you’re too restricted, or it rides up to much when you pose, consider going up a size or choosing another dress.

Have a design in mind, or are you more of an ‘I’ll know it when I see it’ kind of gal? Browse our full collection of opening number pageant dresses and see what stands out! And remember – if a dress causes you to pause and take notice, it just might do the same for the judges!

Get Your Head in the Pageant Game: Part Three – Let’s Get Physical!

Apr 30, 2014

Jovani Dress 9420

If you’ve been following along with us all month long, we hope our tips have been helpful to you. And if you haven’t, please read our last three ‘Get Your Head in the Pageant Game’ blog posts before this one! Thus far we have taken time out for inspirational quotes, and let the music carry us away and get us amped. Now the time has come to embrace the mind-body connection. The two are as intertwined as could be, with each having a pronounced effect on how the other performs and operates. If you want to free your mind and get your head in the game, you’re going to have to get your body there, too!

Getting physical doesn’t have to mean hitting the soccer field or lifting weights at the gym. Of course, if those are the types of physical activities you and your body usually enjoy and benefit from, have at it! We are all unique in what works for us, and learning the activities that we enjoy and feel rejuvenated from can go a long way toward enriching our overall health and happiness. Personally, I feel refreshed inside and out after a slow yoga session. I don’t like being too warm, so hot yoga makes me anxious, but I have friends who swear by it! I also like making myself plenty of space on the floor to really stretch and pay attention to areas I’m tight or holding stress. A long walk through nature is nice as well, and I can’t resist taking a dip in the pool. All of these activities help me put my worries out of mind for a bit, and put the focus on how I’m feeling physically as well as mentally. And, as it turns out, when my body is happier, so is my mind. So, getting my body in the game gets my head in the game, as well. Give it a try!

Get Your Head in the Pageant Game: Part Two – Turn Up these 10 Tunes!

Terani Couture Mermaid Gown P3112In this next post offering up some ways to get your mind ready for pageant, we’ll be highlighting some of our favorite feel-good, inspirational songs that can get us singing and up on our feet on even the cloudiest of days. Music is a wonderful, powerful thing, and can play a major role in getting you primed and pumped for pageant. Just make sure it’s the right kind of music – you don’t want to listen to something slow and sad and end up with your mascara running!

If you haven’t checked out our previous 2 posts, please do! You can find them here and here. And once you’ve given them a peek, check out some of our top tunes to rock out to below. Don’t worry – there’s a good mix! Some were chosen for their lyrics in particular, and others because they just have a way of making us belt them out loud and maybe even jump around a little bit. When no one’s looking, of course. ;)

10,000 Maniacs – These Are Days
The Black Eyed Peas – I Gotta Feeling
Modest Mouse – Float On
Alicia Keys – Wait Til You See My Smile
The Killers – Mr. Brightside
Faith Hill – Wild One
Enrique Iglesias – I Like It

Robyn – Dancing On My Own

Bonus Track: Pistol Annies – Hell On Heels (because really – it should be on every list!)

Get Your Head in the Pageant Game: Part One – Inspirational Quotes!

Apr 21, 2014

Tony Bowls Pageant Gown 114C04As we mentioned in our previous post – Pretty, Powerful, Positive – Get Your Head in the Pageant Game! – this month we’ll be posting ideas for preparing yourself to shine your pageant brightest even if you aren’t feeling your best, or your mind is on something else. It’s important to really be in the moment during a pageant, focusing on everything from your smile to your walk, to your talent to your communication with judges. And one of the helpful ways we have found to do just that is to read some inspirational quotes before leaving the dressing room. So take a deep breath, brush your troubles aside, and really let these quotes sink in!

“When I was a child my mother said to me, ‘If you become a soldier, you’ll be a general. If you become a monk, you’ll be the pope.’ Instead I became a painter and wound up as Picasso.” ― Pablo Picasso

“What could we accomplish if we knew we could not fail?” ― Eleanor Roosevelt

“Believe in yourself and there will come a day when others will have no choice but to believe with you.” ― Cynthia Kersey

“Walk amongst the natives by day, but in your heart be Superman.” ― Gene Simmons

“You have been told that, even like a chain, you are as weak as your weakest link. This is but half the truth. You are also as strong as your strongest link.” – Kahlil Gibran

“Your greatness is revealed not by the lights that shine upon you, but by the light that shines within you.” ― Ray Davis

“Always Remember to take your Vitamins: Take your Vitamin A for ACTION, Vitamin B for Belief, Vitamin C for Confidence, Vitamin D for Discipline, Vitamin E for Enthusiasm!!” ― Pablo

“If you doubt you can accomplish something, then you can’t accomplish it. You have to have confidence in your ability, and then be tough enough to follow through.” ― Rosalynn Carter

“If you don’t have confidence, you’ll always find a way not to win.” ― Carl Lewis

“Remember, happiness doesn’t depend upon who you are or what you have; it depends solely upon what you think. So start each day by thinking of all the things you have to be thankful for. Your future will depend very largely on the thoughts you think today. So think thoughts of hope and confidence and love and success.” ― Dale Carnegie

“If we all did the things we were capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.” ― Thomas Edison

“A winner is not someone who wins. It’s someone who tries and isn’t afraid to lose.” ― Nusrat Sultana

“Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!” ― Audrey Hepburn

Pretty, Powerful, Positive – Get Your Head in the Pageant Game!

Apr 16, 2014

Sherri Hill 2753 Short Pageant DressThere are certain simple truths that we can hear a million times in our lives and some of us will still be cautious of believing them. For example, that one of the sexiest things about any woman is her confidence. We almost don’t want to believe this, because sometimes we aren’t feeling all that confident. So we put on our stilettos and our shiniest lip gloss, and we try to make up for our lack of confidence with sexy accessories that enhance our assets. And you know what happens? We end up getting less compliments than we did the day we wore a baggy t-shirt but were super confident and happy!

Don’t get us wrong – we love stilettos and lip gloss! – we’re just trying to highlight that if your mind and your heart aren’t in something, all the shoes, makeup, jewelry and clothes in the world aren’t going to hide it. And sometimes, for many of us, we aren’t really ‘up for the pageant’ the day it comes. Maybe we were the whole week before, and maybe we’d be excited for it the whole week after, but that day? Nope, not feeling it! Maybe we’re fighting with our best friend, or maybe we haven’t been sleeping well. Perhaps we are coming down with a cold or are distracted by how busy we are with work or school. There are countless reasons it can be hard to get your head in the pageant game, but it’s important to overcome them before you take the stage. Because just like stilettos and lip gloss aren’t going to hide how you’re feeling on less-than-confident days, a gorgeous gown and impeccable hair aren’t going to hide that you aren’t as excited to be there as much as the other contestants are.

So what’s a girl to do? How are you supposed to put everything else out of your mind and fiercely focus on the pageant at hand? Don’t worry – we’ve got some great ideas! And we’ll be sharing them throughout the month right here. So be sure to check back all April long for tips on getting in a pageant state of mind when your mind is somewhere else!

Spring 2014 Makeup Trends Pageantified!

Mar 31, 2014

Some gals are obsessed with shoes, some with the latest in celebrity gossip. As for me, it’s all about makeup and purses! I mean, sure, there are other things I get pretty passionate about. Fancy dresses, for one, and I’ve been known to browse puppy pictures for hours on end. But when it comes to the big seasonal announcements, such as the best makeup trends for spring 2014, that’s when I just about lose my mind with excitement. Seriously, I can’t watch the videos, read the articles, or look at the pretty pictures fast enough!

Bright Orange LipstickI was recently flipping through some articles on what’s poised for greatness in the makeup world this spring, and started thinking about how those looks work for pageants. Let’s look at a few selections from Glamour Beauty’s The Best Makeup Trends From Spring 2014 Fashion Week and see how they stack up for the stage…

Trend: Soft Berry Lips – As we all know, words like ‘soft’, ‘subtle’, and ‘muted’ can translate to ‘washed out’ once the bright lights hit. However, if you’re going for a more natural look, or really want to play up your eyes, this trend could work. Is a bold lip a must? Ignore the call for softness, but sweeten up to the idea of a rich berry!

Trend: Bright Orange Lipstick – You know, I really wish this would work for me! I ADORE orange and often gravitate toward it when buying things for my home. Orange dishes, orange candles, orange throw pillows and more. But as a lighter skinned lady with pink undertones, orange is a tricky color to pull off when it comes to clothes and makeup. That said, for many who don’t share my coloring, orange is an absolute homerun. It’s fresh, youthful, unique and eye-catching, and if it works with your skin tone and hair color, please give it a try in pageant and beyond!

Trend: Glowing Skin – Yes, yes, and a little more yes. And then throw in another yes for good measure! I am just as drawn to the look of flawless matte skin in a magazine as the next girl is, but in real life it can look flat, dry and lifeless. Dewy, fresh, glowing skin, however? That just about always looks amazing, whether you’re headed to the office, a pageant, or just want to look fabulous while you read the Sunday paper. The bonus is that it feels better and often is better for your skin as well. Since you aren’t striving for a flat matte, you can feel free to work with a super skin-satisfying moisturizer as your base. This makes it easier to smile because your skin feels nourished, and because you’ve taken all the power away from powder!

How to Look Beautiful at Beauty Pageants

Feb 20, 2014

Finding stunning South Carolina pageant dresses is only one key to becoming successful on the beauty pageantPageant_Beauty_Tips competition circuit. Looking good is essential, not only with regard to grooming, but in the entire way you carry yourself. Good looks simply don’t happen overnight. To look your best on competition days, get plenty of sleep beforehand, drink lots of water and eat a balanced diet. All of these simple rules that everyone should follow will keep your skin glowing.

Savvy contestants know that proper application is paramount. Make sure to use concealer to hide dark circles and other flaws. For that truly seamless, professional look, invest in an airbrush makeup applicator. When applying your makeup, put on your most dazzling smile because this is how the judges and the audience will see you. Make sure you use moisturizer, both for your face and your lips to avoid those tiny cracks and crevices.

Being comfortable in your South Carolina pageant dresses is another key. A dress that is too tight, too loose, or doesn’t suit your body, won’t make you beautiful and can actually distract from your look. The same applies for shoes. Learn how to walk in high heels before you go out on the runway.

Choosing the Perfect Swimsuit for Your Beauty Pageant

Feb 16, 2014

Pageant-SwimwearThe swimwear portion of a beauty pageant can be nerve-wracking for many pageant contestants, but this doesn’t have to be the case when you choose the suit that is right for you. Just following our tips for choosing the best pageant swimwear for you!

  1. First and foremost, the pageant swimwear that you choose should be comfortable and should fit your body. If you are not comfortable wearing a two piece swimsuit, then you should not choose this look. While it may be beautiful on stage, it will not do you any good if you look nervous and uncomfortable wearing it on stage.
  2. Once you’ve chosen your style of suit, choose the color or pattern that’s right for you. Pageant Designs offers exciting colors and patterns from the top designer Lady M that will help you dazzle on stage. Whether you choose a pretty in pink suit or opt for something that is bright yellow.
  3. Complete your look with undergarment pads that help hold your suit in place. These allow you to move around the stage with increased confidence.

Following these three simple tips will help you choose the right pageant swimwear for your needs.
